October, 2013 Water District The Water District has been inspected by FEMA and the Colorado Department of Health. We have also completed the necessary forms to apply for financial assistance from FEMA to repair our damaged water system. Pinewood had 4 waterlines that crossed the Little Thompson. Needless to say, the raging river destroyed all 4 lines. There are 3 areas that have no water; everyone living past the Crescent Lake Bridge to the end of Kiowa, the area across the bridge on Seneca, Iroquois Makah, Seminole, Cody CT. and Chieftain CT; and the Cree CT area. Because of the government shut down, Carl has not yet received the permits required to work on these lines. And yes, the water in the tanks has been treated and is potable water. From Gabi Benson…. “Hi Laura, Carl has been working to restore the Treatment Plant and distribution lines. He has the plant functioning, but the water in the river and the reservoir is full of debris and the color of hot chocolate. Even after treatment, it has a yellow color and a slight odor. He is working to repair the reservoir’s aeration system damaged by the flood. This might help the turbidity. At the current usage rate, we only have 2 weeks or so of water remaining in the tanks. If he can start making water again, the tanks will start to fill, but we need to encourage the residents still in Pinewood to conserve water and only use the bare minimum. The lines to the areas beyond Seneca, Cree Court and Kiowa Island are a bigger problem. We...

There have been a lot of questions, rumors and confusion about the ability to access Pinewood via vehicles on highway 36. It’s understandable as there are several agencies involved and the communication flow is slow. Resources are stretched with so much destruction. That said, I’m working with the right people with authority so we can get answers to our questions. Included in this effort was a 20-minute phone call with Ashley Mohr, the official CDOT spokeswoman. She wanted you all to know that they are having a meeting tomorrow morning (Tuesday, October 7) to discuss Pinewood and will have more answers after that meeting. When I read the news that the Utah Guard was on their way to Colorado, I felt an overwhelming sense of hope and gratitude. Hopefully you did too. So maybe it’s time to show our gratitude to the ones doing the very hard work to return us all home! The Colorado National Guard has enlisted the Utah National Guard to help rebuild highway 36. CDOT and our Colorado guard are stretched so thin and have been working non-stop since the floods over three weeks ago. DENVER (AP) — Utah National Guard soldiers are coming to Colorado to help rebuild one of the highways leading to Rocky Mountain National Park. About 120 soldiers are scheduled to leave Friday morning. They’re expected to start work Saturday rebuilding U.S. Highway 36 from Lyons to Estes Park, which was badly damaged in last month’s floods. Colorado is paying the soldiers with state funds because of the federal shutdown. However, the state will eventually seek reimbursement for much of the $500,000 cost. The soldiers are members of an engineer battalion which has built roads in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as after Hurricane Katrina. (Photo Credit: AP/Brennan Linsley)
