As access becomes available to areas affected by the flood, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office will be requiring registration and credentialing to enter these areas and will be limited to residents only. These areas may be accessible only by means other than a regular vehicle. (ATV, hiking, horse, etc.). It is highly recommended that the area of the Big Thompson Canyon (Highway 34) between the mouth of the canyon west to Drake be avoided. Registration and credentialing are required for those residents attempting to gain access. A photo id and proof of residency (utility bill, tax statements, etc.) must be presented to be issued credentials. Like several of you, I’ve been on the phone with Hickenlooper’s office and CDOT today… there is a lot of confusion about access to Pinewood. As of this writing both offices agree that if you have a driver’s license with a Pinewood address – the national guard check point should let you drive down from Estes to the break in the road at Big Elk. The National Guard does not want people parking in the way of heavy equipment on the highway but on side roads like what is left of the entrance to CR-47/Big Elk. I’m still waiting to hear from the CDOT construction manager for more details but for now… we can access our homes during the 36 construction process. Lyons, Colorado – Gov. John Hickenlooper announced this afternoon that the State of Colorado has contracted with a Colo. National Guard engineering company to rebuild U.S. 36 between Lyons and Estes Park. Work on the highway has begun from both directions – from the Town of Lyons and the Town of Estes Park – with similar equipment and crews working towards each other. In an effort to expedite construction, all traffic on U.S. 36 west of Lyons is prohibited, effectively immediately. Beginning Monday, all access to Apple Valley Rd will be severely restricted between the hours of 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. The closure applies to vehicular, cycling, and pedestrian traffic. All remaining residents who wish to exit via the 4×4 road to Spring Gulch must be at gate 1 by 10:00 AM – After all public vehicles are through, the fire fighters will follow out. From that point on, there will be no controlled exits to ensure safety. Pinewood Springs Firefighter, Randy Craner will be remaining behind for FEMA and construction workers lodging and basic life support or fires with only a few trained personnel. For emergencies, the residents remaining will have to go to Randy’s home at the Little Elk Meadows Lodge so that he can deploy support if needed. This is only until phone lines are re-established and the normal 911 system is available again.
